VMware, Nvidia Work to Improve Virtual Desktop Performance
VMware and Nvidia will work together to implement the graphics company Quadro's Virtual Graphics platform on VMware's View virtual desktop platform in order to allow more users to ditch the traditional workstation. The two companies announced the partnership at VMworld Europe in Copenhagen on Wednesday. A key part of VMware's strategy for servers and desktops is to evolve its platforms and tools to allow more users to virtualize more applications. The work with Nvidia is focused on the latter. Since the advent of server-based computing, handling graphics-intensive tasks has always been a challenge, but performance has gradually improved.Users of graphics-intensive applications, such as engineers, artists and scientists, will be able to work from almost anywhere, without being tied to their workstation and access their applications from, for example, tablets and thin or zero clients, according to VMware. The solution uses a dedicated Nvidia Quadro card on the host and a graphics driver in the virtual desktop. A demo at VMworld Europe, which rendered a human head, showed that it works. However, there is one drawback: each user needs a graphics card of their own on the host to deliver the improved performance. There isn't a firm date for when the View and Quadro Virtual Graphics will start shipping, but VMware is hoping that some users will be able to start testing before the end of the year, according to a VMware spokesman. The Quadro Virtual Graphics platform was first shown by NVIDIA as a technology demonstration at this year's SIGGRAPH conference, which focuses on computer graphics, in August in Vancouver, Canada.Send news tips and comments to mikael_ricknas@idg.com Would you recommend this story? Coffee & Power Drops Virtual Currency For Real-World Work
Coffee Power, the experimental "meta-company" that lets remote workers hire each other for small jobs, has decided to drop its virtual currency in exchange for regular old U.S. dollars. The change will have no impact on functionality or in-progress jobs; it's simply intended to make Coffee Power easier to adopt. Existing balances in the virtual C$ will be automatically converted to US$.Coffee Power was founded by Second Life creator Philip Rosedale, whose interest in virtual currencies built a thriving economy in that virtual world. But for Coffee Power, whose users do real-world work, Rosedale thinks a real-world currency will be easier to understand.

In preparation for working off the stuffing and the pumpkin pie, the mashed potatoes and the extra helping of gravy, I thought it might be a good idea to dust off the Wii Fit.I knew just where it was, hidden behind the exercise ball, the hand weights and the tangle of exercise bands cluttering up the floor of the den closet. In the general scheme of things, I feel less guilty about the Wii Fit than I do about those other accouterments of the home fitness plan I should be following.Having won the Wii in a raffle a couple of years ago, I figure I’m not technically responsible for bringing it into the house. Moreover, the Wii Fit we eventually bought to go with it was a birthday present for my daughter, not for me.Therefore, in the complicated schema of exercise guilt, I don’t feel as obligated to work out virtually as I do, say, to use the treadmill. In fact, let’s not even discuss the treadmill, other than to say that one family member is perennially faithful about using it and hops right on whenever anyone is willing to supervise his 35-minute race walk. This would be the dog.At any rate, out came the Wii one day last week. My son kindly plugged it in and turned it on for me. He even pressed the appropriate buttons on the appropriate remote controls so that the television screen could receive Wii signals.“I couldn’t find the Wii Fit, Mom,” he said before he left for work. “But you should be fine. I’m sure it’s easy to set up.”We both knew better. For the past year or two, we have had a running discussion about my inability to watch a DVD.He argues that even the dog could slide “Incredible Journey” into the DVD player and press “play,” which might be true given Charlie’s ability to maintain a steady pace on the treadmill. But I’m positive that the number of remote controls required for movies grows exponentially, unnecessarily complicating my life. Every time I look in the basket where we keep them, there are at least two ...

Some kinds of education reform need not involve political battles between unions and legislators. Some reforms involve rethinking how and where teachers and students interact, and creating new, more efficient learning opportunities through technology.New Clark County School District Superintendent Dwight Jones is fully behind such reforms and rightly sees the Internet as a tool to not only improve the graduation prospects of credit-deficient students, but provide gifted and motivated teens with opportunities to achieve their potential.Virtual High School is growing, the Review-Journal's Trevon Milliard reported Sunday. The 7-year-old program has 12,000 students this year and a goal of enrolling 30,000 by next year. For the vast majority of those students, online classes give them a chance to retake courses they've failed. For years, high school campuses have struggled to provide enough makeup classes to the students who need them. Putting these teens in classrooms before school, after school and during summers has proved inflexible and expensive. Now more students are being encouraged to take such classes through Virtual High. The online format might seem impersonal, but it holds students and teachers plenty accountable. Students must motivate themselves to work through the material. Teachers are available via phone, email and text messaging, and they provide personal instruction for struggling students. Meanwhile, district administrators have the ability to log into any class at any time from their desks to verify progress.Virtual High also has 150 full-time students. Among them are Heather Chmura, who takes classes around her schedule helping manage her family's three businesses. "People say we're the anti-social kids, but look at me," Ms. Chmura said during a break at the Wetzel's Pretzels franchise she runs. "I'm dealing with people all day."Jared Smith, a 15-year-old former Boulder City High School student, switched to Virtual High to better manage the practice schedule of his year-round swimming club. "There's a lot of wasted time in school," he said. These students aren't slackers, and the test scores for Virtual High's full-time students reflect that. Last year, all of them passed the High School Proficiency Exam's reading test, 90 percent passed the science test and 87 percent passed ...
